Ideas for starting a new niche directory

I'd like to start a new niche directory and the way I would like to do it is to offer 2 options:
1 paid inclusion for 1 year. the sites would then be organized either by hits, page rank, alphabetically, etc.
2 reciprocal link

the best of the best will be included automatically when they are found.

what do you think about this?

I think thats the right direction to move toward, and it's going to take you some time. But the time spent will be well worth it in the end.

Hi,

Well many directories are like that anyway but still go ahead with it. On your points that you have brought up:-

Paid inclusion.

Its good that you are only asking for payment for one year but I would make it so if its payment for a regular link that it a “lifetime” but if its for a featured link then do that for one year.

1b: For me my preference is to list sites alphabetically

I'm the opposite. I prefer listings that are sorted by PR.

i also think perhaps to get your niche forum off the group you should possible allow 100 or however many completely free links - obviously u'd only accept well designed sites with a PR ranking, but it would get your site off to a flying start. Theres nothing worse than a dead directory with no links!

And also it would get your directory a little bit populated. Just only allow good quality sites

what do you guys think about looking for and adding quality sites manually while the directory is not that popular and gets little traffic?

Well you will get very “little” traffic and it is not the best way.
