My instincts were telling me there was a path problem and instead of a 404 error page they were loading the admin. Off to error logs and bingo. Maybe a bad .htaccess.
On looking I found a wrong .htaccess in the admin directory. It appeared this dummy uploaded the root access to the admin directory after adding some rewrite stuff.
Appears that my old software engineers instincts aren't completely dead yet even if I am getting worse about making stupid mistakes.
Back to work.

I am going to honor my promise to update this saga so here goes.
I spent lots of time evaluating Indexu and driving them nuts with questions. I had decided to bite the $$$ bullet and buy. Before doing the deed I took 1 last look at things and thankfully discovered that a major upgrade is coming. Well, I ain't fond of laying out $$$ and going through a learning curve only to have to learn a whole thing again so I didn't buy.
A thing anyone looking should know about Indexu is that unless you want something 'out of the box' be prepared to learn how to build themes/templates and do mods. There isn't much of anything be it plugins or templates etc. that will not cost you $$$. While they are free most require a paid subscription to a site or some such to get access to these 'free' items.
I will say that there is lits of good information if one is willing to dig. There seems to be a lot of flexibility in the package. Nice things can be done if one is willing to work. Bruce wrote the best damn installation manual I have ever seen and he is going to be producing more.
I will likely end up buying a license st some point but for now I decided not to wait who knows how long for version 6 to be released so...
Been digging into eSyndicate. I started with one of the free templates and after several days of intense digging have managed to build a 'not off the shelf' look. As far as I have found documentation is skimpy at best. Learning anything off the forums is very hit and miss. There are some nice plugins. Their blocks functionality is nice and by using some smarty tags just adds to this.
The software seems to be going through a bunch of minor releases and I keep running into problems. The good thing is the response to support tickets is quick but they never give any explanation regarding what, where or when. Just a short fixed now. Latest one is a function not found when building/updating pages.
We are moving on something like 3 steps forward and 2 steps back.
This is just my personal observations over the last few weeks.
