Which one would you go for now? As the directory market is saturated with directories now. As everyday a new directory is launched and mostly these are general. Which one would you suggest?

General or Niche?

Are there benefits to one over the other? Or is it just what you prefer?

Would it be that a niche directory is harder to startup compared to general directory?

Many people argue niche is best because of it's specific content it's easier to manage and target advertising options.

If your starting off run a general directory, see the web. Get to know what the good and bad sites are. Then choose what you want to do from there.

Hmmm.. I'd have to really say Niche, but general pulls a lot more advertising out than niche does, and people love general directories that are open with listings and who they list.

Niche is great, plus like DM said, they have great content and also have good advertising, but most of all I have seen General Directories pull out better positioning on the web than Niche, others say differently, but that it's ok

I only have a niche directory. It does well in search engines and I think provides a useful resource to my site visitors BUT attracting people to add their (appropriate) sites is not easy. Outside the Webmaster community there are few who seem to know or care about directories.

At some point I might start a general directory. Am I right in thinking that almost all general directories are essentially just there to sell text links, based on site PR, or is there more to it than that (that's not a criticism it's a question)?

Well that could be said with a few directories but some are there for webmaster to use. For many directories users only add a link just for the link back.

Only a few directories give you any traffic back for your link.

From what I’m seeing after the big daddy update less then 50 directories give the submitter a good chance of obtaining any link value from their submission let alone any traffic. Content of quality and lots of it is what Google is looking for in a directory.

I LOVE your wowdirectory (even if I am too poor to add an entry).

People listing in my France niche directory certainly get real 'link value' - often I am the only link shown in google for sites listed in the directory.

Do I understand that you are saying general directories usually offer no value? Some of the directories I have added to (but not all) show up as genuine links in G etc.

When you say they are looking for 'content of quality' in a directory what does that mean? - I know what it means for a website but how to do you achieve that in a directory?
