I would say absolutely! Just as they are an enticement for vBulletin or phpBB or Wordpress. In the end, a mature site becomes unique, but the path to uniqueness starts with learning from others first.
More often these days, people customize their template and site, and do not keep the default look of the template. But the template can be a great starting point for what they will do in the future, as they become a more mature site.
If you look at Directory Owners, couldn't it be said that your forum looks similar to others? Couldn't it also be said that you have matured over time with an increasing uniqueness?
The same is true with virtually any software someone installs, but it is good to have options when you are getting started.

A yes or no would have been good enough! You maybe need to stop thinking you can use
others as an example or at least if you do why not try and use examples that are likely to be unique. You aren't in the league of vbulletin or phbb, probs won't ever be as they are 'FORUM' scripts that will 99.9% of the time be 'UNIQUE' regardless. your a directory script David and are more susceptable to duplication than virtually any other software and that's a fact, as many of you script owners offer the ability to parse cat structures, use the same content such as alexa graphs and that, then combine that with duplicate templates, you can see where I'm going with this....
Sure you'll also understand this ain't a personal attack on you, if there were others doing what you do I'd tell them straight too. Thing is it does seem to the baby monster you made and the minions that follow it that are destroying the directory scene in front of our very eyes. Just an honest opinion, you need to either stop making free templates as enticement unless you put a warning sign on them first, or is it the case you don't give a stuff what happens as long as you make your money selling a copy? Sprat to catch a mackeral comes to mind on that one.

Bad example to give.
