You haven't got the time you need to track all the back links you need. Rather watch your serp's and start to worry when they begin to wobble.
I have a problem with directories that just die. I also have a problem with directory owners who have dumped their databases figuring they can start afresh. But this is to be expected if you use the same free directory lists that I use. And the only other question we need ask here is whether one is going to fare any better using directories that charge to review the submissions they receive. I doubt it.
We run a workshop and are trying to lock in the long term value of our sites but who knows what Google is going to do next? Its not in their interests to help you fiddle their search results. And that's why I wouldn't place any value in the tools or the stats they provide. They are trying to waste as much of your time as they possibly can in the hopes that you will give up and leave it all to chance.
Most of this is common sense. There are no short term answers. There are no quick fixes and no lifetime warranties. We have to work long term and try best as we can to understand where we all fit in. If you can get that in perspective you have a better than average chance of keeping ahead of everyone else.
Forget about everything other than your serp's
