With the increasing number of website owners comes increasing Adwords customers who bid up all keywords worth using. So most keywords are much more expensive than a few years ago. If you're not careful, you'll spend xx dollars for x return. I'm real good at that.

Some "experts" say bid on the niche words, the lesser used ones that are cheaper. But they're cheaper for a reason, fewer clicks, sometimes hardly anything. Google, unlike Yahoo who are happy to take anything, will tell you bluntly not to expect much from these seldom clicked keywords.

I think AdWords is especially risky with low margin products. BTW I bought Perry Marshall's AdWords tutorial, implemented his strategies and lost again. I've gained an e-mail buddy for life though.

I think that using adwords depends on the product you are selling.

For example, If you are selling lingerie, there are a lot of guys just wanting to see women in lingerie or naked women, so one of the keywords they use is naturally "lingerie" and they can spend plenty of time just clicking and looking without buying which ends up costing the advertiser a lot of money for nothing, because at the end of the day, they never had any intention of buying.

If you are selling a serious product or service, there are not many people who do searches for that particular product unless they are looking to buy. They may search plenty of sites looking for quality, cost, design etc, because it's not like they have to drive around looking, so again the advertiser takes the risk of spending money on adwords for nothing, but the risk is much lower.

So my advice is, consider what you are selling and what the chances are of people searching for pleasure as opposed to searching to buy before you decide whether adwords is for you or not, and if you decide to use the adwords, you should choose your keywords carefully.
