I have a small Google ad on the top of my site. When I first started the site, I was mainly targeting weight loss sites, now my directory and categories are more general, targeting all in the health industry, yet my ads only show the few low paying weight loss ads.

Anyone know how to get my ads to reflect health instead of weight loss?

First, you mean Google AdSense, not AdWords.

AdWords is the Google program where you buy advertising to be displayed on someone else's site.

AdSense is Google's contextual ad publishing system where site owners display ads on their pages and Google pays the site owners to display those ads.

Google uses a special group of AdSense spiders to crawl web pages to determine the page content. It then selects ads to display which are best matched to the page content from among all of their available ads.

If your pages are displaying ads that aren't well matched to your content, it may be for several reasons. First, try rewriting your content, especially the content closest to the ad location (e.g., if your ad is at the top of the page, make sure the page content/text near the top of the page accurately reflects what you believe is the content of the page). There is also a special tag you can use to identify content you do not want matched to ads (I've never actually used it but I could look it up) - this is something you might want to use if you have a block of text that is common to every page and you want the ads to be matched to other content on individual pages.

Another big factor is what ads Google has available in its inventory that could be potential matches for your actual content. If there's nothing more specific than weight loss ads, Google will serve up the weight loss ads. Sometimes, that just depends on what ads are available versus what other content your site contains.
