Why do I always think about that ridiculous story of the King without any clothes when people start talking about PR? Do you actually know anyone who bought theirs? Were they conned into it or was it just a chain reaction.

I don't buy the Google anti-paid thing. Paid Advertising makes the web go 'round and Google is the king of it with Adsense. I can't see them doing this, after all, some of the Paid directories are too valuable to make free. The payment they receive shows value. It would seem contradictory.

I dont think this is as cut and dried as Paid or Free. What is Google trying to achieve? What can they do? What cant they do? I am hoping is that its just the link pimps they are after rather than directory owners.

There is a very interesting article from Danny Sullivan wondering the ability of Google about spotting paid links:

Can You Spot The Paid Link?

My guess is that what Google will do is becoming more clever about analysing the relevancy of a link, discounting the value of links coming from non-relevant sites.

Google will need to amend their webmaster guidelines which recommends submitting to authority directories (including Yahoo! which ain't cheap).

I just saw the new Harry Potter movie last night. Matt Cutts reminds me of the head of Hogwarts who keeps posting more and more rules about what's not allowed. Sooner or later even Google isn't going to be able to stay on top with these types of bizarre policy decisions.

I read a update MC did on his blog and he stated that directories will not be affected by this. If that was the case then I think Yahoo would be in big trouble for charging $299 per year for a link from their directory.

Affectd by what? Directories have already been affected by the changes that have been made. What is Google trying to do?
