Most of the bidding categories are now categorically organize. The process is simple. One can place the minimum bid and if one chooses to be up higher rather than being on the second page then he can pay a little more. Bidding directory allows you an opportunity to get a little exposure by paying a little more.
In a traditional directory, they allow you to get some exposure by being Featured or Sponsorship. Bidding directory takes it to another level by placing your website on the Front page were the visitors first entrance, thus leads to more exposure. Front page also ranks higher on PR.
In cases like
Big Web Links Directory - Bid for Position Permanent Directory were some people invest $$$ on a high PR (PT7) to be on a front page and maybe some traffic gives the sites listed there a higher exposure in recognition, it is sorta like having a Billboard in TimeSquare,(NY). Me, I just submit the minimum amount as I cannot afford the $$$, but, by doing that will also benefit me on this coming PR update as my sites are listed on a non-crowded category
Another great thing about bidding directory as oppose to a general directories is the category structures, it is usually one up from the main site, If my site ever winds up on a second page, I can up it to bring it up to where it was and most bid directories are lifetime listing which is better than yearly.
I would watch out for some bidding directories that do increase there own bids or there friends sites. A DP member name rtchar has a list of bid directories and has posted an ethical bidding post that bid directory owners should follow.
Overall, there is nothing wrong with bidding directories, it is more beneficial than a general directories as far as getting more PR juice or SERPS. Search for a site that is listed on a bidding directories and a bidding directories would be on the top 10 results.
