I pretty much only buy links for PR because I rarely get traffic from directories. I think it is pretty much accepted that directory links don't give traffic unless they are directories of directories like directory critic. Uggh, that is a lot of directories in one sentence - I think we need an accepted abbr. for directory (i.e. Capital D?).
I'm strong believer that good SERPs are the best way to get traffic and D links help you get good SERPs.

I agree with you in the fact that most directories do not send alot of traffic. And yes, directories can provide good serps as long as one uses the correct anchor text.
