PR has just been rubbished so I don't think that one needs to be debated but why are back links important? 99.99% of the general directories out there will never pass any quality traffic so why is this a factor? Directory listings feed the serp's. That in my mind is the only value any directory has and the only question you need ask is how difficult is it to get listed. In my book directories that accept anything and everything have a short term shelf life and are best avoided. That is unless your site is under construction or if you are in a dodgy industry. Whereas those directories which are run by a genuine directory master who has a vested interest in sorting and organising the links displayed are a good long term investment. There is also a good chance you will get few organic links. For obvious reasons almost everyone is paying a lot more attention to quality these days and if you submit your site and do get accepted to a directory which specialises in quality links there is a good chance that emerging directory owners will make use of that content and add your link to their own directories. Maybe just a nice idea but one that's eminently practical as well as being one that should be encouraged

The easy answer is that you don't. You could go out and buy a link from a high PR site but its a risky business these days and it makes a lot more sense to work a little harder and get your site as close to PR 0 as you possibly can. If despite all your best endeavour you should suddenly jump to PR4 in the next update you are doing something wrong and should start covering your tracks before you get zapped.

Why do you want PR?

Default The Best Free Directory

I thought one should get a high PR to get high visibility in the search engines.Don't all sites want high Pr? Or is it not important any more.I am certainly not going to purchase links.

That was just one of the urban legends you will get fed by the low life that infest this industry. They lurk on every corner with the express purpose of wasting your time and trying to persuade you to part with your hard earned cash. You submit your site to directories to get back links to get the exposure in the search engines you are looking for. But if you are running a directory you don't need exposure in the search engines and you would be better advised to concentrate on ensuring that the content you list in your directory is unique and above all else useful.

It's the old cliche "Build a quality resource with fresh quality content" and visitors may find your site useful and link to it naturally. Social networks may find your site useful and it may spread like wildfire.

If PR is what you are after then give it low priority and let it build naturally.
