Over the last few weeks I have seen lots of new but familiar folks signing up here and actually participating and sharing in some rather controversial topics.

I am very pleased to see All of you and know that there are many others out there whom share the same principles about the Directory industry current state of affairs and the future.

For the other folks whom have been sitting on the sidelines listening/reading or to the folks just joining for the first time and reading some of the recent topics.....trust me when I say...we aren't being negative. We are simply trying to rectify and clear up the industry that has been overwhelmed with cheaters, scammers, and otherwise crooked individuals and their followers.

These folks typically call the rest of us with some common sense and business acumen..and I quote here ("retard, dumba$$, stupid, liars, babies") and the list goes on.

To you I say...make your own mind up between what the crooks want you to think and believe and what the rest of us are saying and practicing.

I just wanted to post a short piece here and say THANKS to those of you whom have complimented, supported and/or other wise shown your similar thoughts on the recent directory debates/arguments etc. both here at Directory-Owners and over on DigitalPoint.

I try not to go off the deepend or preach to much except when I feel strongly about a situation. I tend to setback and observe more than anything else. Being the owner of this forum, I have to pick my battles carefully as I don't want to show prejudice or favortitism to any one side/one topic or one person. This makes it hard sometimes to keep from offending at least someone.

If I have offended anyone, and I know I have for a few of you...don't take it personally. It is not a personal attack on you or your opinion.

For those whom have left me (wildweb) Green Rep. over on DP...thanks again and I do appreciate your support. I understand many of you whom do so do not always post publicly how you feel and that's OK too. There are some of us running around whom aren't scared of the gangsters that run amuck.

I do wish everyone the best with their individual directories, projects, sites and life in general.

Tomorrow is always another day.

Referer Spamming

Folks,

I have noticed quite a few directories starting to use different mods for referal stats. Essentially these mods are used to show referring sites. Some directories have chosen to place these referral mods on their front page of the directory.

*_DON'T DO IT!_*

*Why* you ask?

Here's a similar "spam" that a lot of you are victims of and probably haven't noticed....

I'm sure a lot of you have encountered the sleezy link submitter whom will submit a site (either paid or free listing) to your site. Nearly all directories have a "Top Listings" or "Most Popular Listings/Sites" page as well, some where on the directory. As a general rule of thumb, this Top Listing page typically has a higher page rank than other pages within the directory. Thus, those sleezy link submitters will use proxies etc. to click on their own link within your directory and raise their hit stats so their own link appears on your higher ranked Top Listing page. One of the most popular sleez bag site owners I have seen on several sites (including a few of my own) is:
Code:
---------
ludlow-selfcatering.co.uk
---------

I have actually suspended this jerkoff's links on my sites for his false hit scheme.

*So now for the main topic of the post: Referal Spam and placing the Referral Mod on your directory homepage....*

*Definition of referer spam: The technique involves making repeated web site requests using a fake referer url that points to the site the spammer wishes to advertise. Sites that publicize their access logs, including referer statistics, will then end up linking to the spammer's site, which will in turn be indexed by the search engines as they crawl the access logs.*

*This benefits the spammer because of the free link, and also gives the spammer's site improved search engine placement due to link-counting algorithms that search engines use.*
*Some web sites receive so many referer spam hits that they amount to a denial of service attack on the server because there are not enough resources left on the server to handle legitimate traffic.*

*If your still having problems understanding what the hell I'm talking about or understanding how a referral mod on your homepage is dangerous. Here's the nut of the issue: Lets say you use the referral mod and have it on your homepage or any public page for that matter. If I access your site, the referral mod is going to show my visit to your page/site and the page I came from. So if I wanted to get www.somespam******site.com to show up on your page, I just go from the spam site to your site and BAM!...my spam site is being advertised by YOU for FREE on a potentially high PR page. It will be crawled and indexed by the SE's all for free and at your expense.*

*That is why I *CAUTION* you to *_NOT_* use a referral mod.*

*For more info. just do a search here: referer spam - Google Search*
