You want to optimize your website, so users can find your website through search engines, here are some tips:
1 - Think first about your users and their experience when they are in your website, don't make search engines and your log files your priority.
2 – Page load: make it as fast as you can, think about it, when you search for something and get into a website that takes a lot of time to load, then you simply go back and find another website.
If your images are too big, go back and optimize them. (switching Jpeg to GIF is one easy way to cut picture size.)
3 – Do not use any black hat SEO (search engine optimization) techniques such as hidden text, or invisible links in your pages - the spiders will figure it out and in the end you do more harm than good.
4 – Title of your HTML pages: try to have at least 3 of your keywords in your title tags.
5 – HTML Meta tags: are not important in modern search engines, use them but do not rely on them.
6 – Clean URLs: every body says they are better, and search engines such as Google will index those pages faster, but I think a modern search engine like Google which generates HTML documents from PDF documents while it crawls the web, doesn’t care so much about your URLs.
Clean URLs just looks nicer.
Example of clean URL -
http://www.host.com/ebooks/java/
Example of messy URL -
http://www.host.com/index.php?id=250...isplay&cat=102
7 – Content: Modern search engines try to return the most relevant result for a search term, which makes sense - when you search for ‘computer e-books’, you want to find a website with ‘computer e-books’ not just any e-book or computer website.
Regardless of the kind of website you have, one way is to have a blog, or a section for articles, because it’s the best way to write about your website and the services you offer, which will be indexed by search engines.
Most important thing is, people will start to link to your website, if you have quality content.
8 – Back links: try to submit your website to as many web directories as you can, use the keywords you want to optimize for in your link titles.
Also users will actually come to your website from those directories.
9 – Page rank: some people try so hard to get high page ranks, but it’s just a matter of time and your work (link building etc.)
Of course a page rank of 7/10 is great, but you don’t need to worry about it, sometimes when you search for a term in Google, top websites have a page rank of less than 5, but they are there because of relevance (content) and also the title of the link backs to them, so again try to have good content that matches the goal/industry/topic of your website, and make link backs that have keywords of your website in their title.
* But for paid directories a good page rank is very critical.
- Page rank is the importance of a page according to Google –
10 – Dmoz and Yahoo! Directories: They will send you good traffic, and also Google is using their(Dmoz) database directly, so if your website is there, it will consider it as an important website.
Getting listed in these directories is actually really hard, you must find the inner most relevant category and then submit, if it doesn't get listed within 4 – 5 months, then submit again, but not sooner.

Take my word, users have to like your content for the site to be successful, so focus on that.
Good luck!
