I run a paid directory. I am looking for some tips on the best ways to promote my site. Could anyone give me some good pointers?

As unpopular as this can be. I have used targeted email blasts.
Nothing comes close the the click thru ability and low cost.
Some people called it spam but heck if honey baked hams can do it so can I.
Just make sure your prospect list is truly qualified.

Put content in your directory home page and start building backlinks.

Advertise your directory in seo forums and try to get an inbound link from directory critic and addurl.nu. I think this will boost your ranking.

Submit your site to good directories, that really indexing all pages. If possible use a blog along with your directory. Social Bookmarking services is always a good idea, and of course get good backlinks for your directory. Forum is a good idea to get your directory some promotion and good tips as well.
