The way I see it you spend as little as you can priming a domain and once you have got a feel and a purpose for the site you want to set up, you need to spend a little money getting it optimised.
This game is all about anchor text and links, lots and lots of them. You have also got to develop the ability to side step the sharks out there and there are also lots and lots of them too.
